Aussie Blind Kids Network
The central aim of Aussie Blind Kids Network is to maximise the age appropriate participation of children and adolescents who are blind or vision impaired in the community.
We believe an effective way to achieve this is by (1) engaging, enabling and empowering families and (2) encouraging and equipping families to develop the lifeskills of children and adolescents who are blind or vision impaired in the home environment.
The National Unified Lifeskills Model (NULM) Project was established in October 2003 as an initiative of the Australian Blindness Forum (ABF).
Aussie Blind Kids is part of the National Unified Lifeskills Model Project.
Aussie Blind Kids is a comprehensive network created for families of children who are blind or vision impaired. The network is also useful for educators, therapists, service providers and anyone else wishing to gain an understanding of how the lifeskills of a blind or vision impaired child should be developed in order for them to live a successful, rewarding and age appropriate life.
Our Goal:
To provide a coherent and centralised framework which brings together families, educators, therapists and service providers in order to achieve a common goal of maximising the independence and potential of every child who is blind or vision impaired
Aims:
- to ensure that children who are blind or vision impaired receive appropriate interventions, which develop skills, strategies and social literacy throughout childhood and adolescence, with particular focus on key developmental and transitional milestones
- to enable and empower families of children who are blind or vision impaired to make informed choices about services, on the basis of equitable access to reliable, comprehensive and timely information, resources, support and training options
- to provide information and support for families regarding the functional, physical, emotional, psychological and social development of children who are blind or vision impaired
- to provide an interactive and family-friendly resource to enable families to self-direct their own learning about the development of lifeskills for children who are blind or vision impaired
- to encourage families to be actively involved in teaching, learning and reinforcing the skills, strategies, understandings and expectations which underpin independence.
